BELL, Gertrude

BELL, Gertrude
(1886–1926)
   British traveler, administrator, and archaeologist. Her linguistic abilities and independent means allowed her to travel widely in the Ottoman provinces of the Middle East, summarized in her book, The Desert and the Sown (1907). In 1915 she became a member of the Arab Bureau, along with T. E. Lawrence, and political officer in the British Army. Having been instrumental in setting up the kingdom of Iraq in 1921, she remained in Baghdad until her death. She founded the Museum of Iraq as well as the British School of Archaeology in Iraq.
